Haiti Trip Updates

8/29/10
7:45 a.m. Pacific the team arrives at Port Au Prince, Haiti to check in for their flight to Miami and then on to LAX.  Can't wait for the stories of what God did with and through them.  May our continued prayers be with our brothers and sisters in Haiti and for all the people in Haiti!!!

8/28/10
Hallelujah!!!The big news on this day is that WATER is being distributed at the top of the reservoir for the first time.  The people of Lamoth are now filling their buckets at the top of hill and in addition to the 2 large valves used to fill their 5 gallon buckets they now also have 6 stations of CLEAN, PURIFIED DRINKING WATER!!!  Tears were shed at the amazing sight.

8/27/10
Yesterday was the final day of the pastors training.  The Haitian pastors received their certificates, and while it is not common in Haiti for the pastors' wives to also receive certificates, all the Haitian pastors encouraged their wives to also receive certificates as an example of the Christian church in Haiti should honor the women in Haiti.  Many of the pastors wives had to walk three hours just to make it over to the training.  Some carried babies along with them on the trek.  (That also means three hours back while carrying babies and balancing bags of rice on their heads.....these ladies have skills!!!)  When the pastors departed they were given bags of rice, water purification systems for their homes, but the thing they valued most was the time of learning, fellowship, and and worship with their fellow American brothers and sisters in Christ.

8/26/10
Open air meetings continue to make an impact on the community.  The medical team connected with about 150 or so Haitians that needed medical treatment.  4 of the Haitians were nearing death prior to medical attention.

VBS continues to be about 500 to 600 strong.  Yes, 500 to 600!!!  Check out the Facebook pictures and become of a fan of the Community World page to see the pictures!!!

The reservoir is also developing as Tim works alongside the translator Ichel, Haitian electrician Claude, plumbers, Ricco, Mason, and Jackie.

Sara
shares, "This whole trip has been amazing so far.  Before I left I was worried that this trip wouldn't compare to when I went to Haiti in May because it was such a great experience.  This trip has been so different from the last that the two are incomparable.  During this trip I've had the opportunity to really get to know the children we have been around.  Last night as I was sitting next to two children I've gotten close with, they asked me to pray for them in English.  It was such a touching moment to have these two beautiful Haitian children asking me to pray for them when they couldn't even understand what I was saying.  I prayed that God would protect those children, to put people in their lives that would be good examples for them, and to give them a passion for following Him.  I asked them if they loved Jesus and if they were Christians.  They told me yes and they loved Jesus.  It struck me at that moment that when I leave Haiti I might never see these children again, but then I thought, "Yes I will.  I know that even if I don't see them here on earth I'll rejoice with them in heaven."  It brought a few tears in my eyes knowing how great God's love for ALL people is.  It reminded me that even though our cultures are so different, we love the same God.  A pretty simple concept, but one that really touched me this week."

God continues to equip.  Pastor Steve, Michael, and Dave lead a training for 50 pastors who opened their hearts and shared great stories.  One of which included a story from a pastor who lost their 17 year old son in the earthquake.

The open air services were amazing as the Haitian singers lead songs of praise in Creole and Sean, Hans, and Tim worshiped in English....the presence of the Lord was certainly felt and Pastor Steve preached the word....
8/23/10
The team remains hard at work building relationships and partnering up with the locals to meet practical needs.  A new electrical transformer has been installed and connected for the community of Lamothe.  The older smaller transformer is being re-purposed for the medical clinic.  The front side of the new reservoir is also up.  Over a 100 local kids participated in VBS that was facilitated by Hans, Sarah, Jacklyn, and Kris.....I don't know who had more fun the kids or the team!!!  Steve, David, and Michael are working hard to prepare for some pastor trainings.  Tim and Luke are seeing progress on the reservoir, and Sean has been teaming up with the doctors and translators at the medical clinic.  Please keep them in your prayers!!!

8/22/10
3 p.m. Pacific Time the team has settled into Lamothe, Haiti.  They have finished set up tasks for the medical clinic and VBS.  Tonight, they will be hosting an open air meeting right in front of the house that they are staying in.  Word is that it's pretty hot in Haiti right now.

8/21/10
The team gathered early for prayer, communion, and connection.  Their teamwork was put to the test right as soon as they reached the American Airlines check-in counter.  American Airlines had initiated a cardboard box embargo and required that supplies be shipped in duffle bags.  So all 22 boxes, each weighing about 50 pounds had to be transferred into, you guessed it, duffle bags.

At 3:15 a.m. Pacific Time, the team met up with the team from Chicago and at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time they arrived safely in Haiti.

Clean Water for Haiti
Clean drinking water is still a desperate need in Haiti.  Calvary has built phase one of the water reservoir through the different teams we have sent over.  Calvary and Vapur have partnered to sell a special blue water bottle (cost:$10.00) that will be available September 12th and 19th at the Community World counter.  Proceeds will go to funding the second phase and additional reservoirs.  If you are part of a sports group or organization that would like to sell these water bottles, contact:
haitirelief@calvarycc.org or 818.575.2220.

Water Reservoir Project
On our most recent trip, the team completed phase one of the water reservoir project in Lamothe.  The upper reservoir has been dug and the next team will install the water pump and filtration system in order to provide the town with easily accessible clean water.

Volunteer Opportunities
As our next team prepares to go to Haiti, we will be sending out calls for volunteers.  If you would like to assist, please email haitirelief@calvarycc.org.

Tents for Haiti

The 238 collected tents have now been distributed in various areas of Haiti.  The tents will provide shelter for over 1,500 Haitians during the rainy season.  Thank you to all who participated, the generosity and outpouring of support has been phenomenal, God is truly doing
amazing things!
See pictures from the tent drive.
